Prose :

Uncertainty

the tub

most every day
since school began
we bring him food
then catch a ride

in envy
the other girls
watch us
arrive

doubled up
on the back
of his
motorcycle

he, twenty-five
we, sixteen
princesses
in our own right

we rode our bikes
from the store to his door
just like yesterday
and the day before

bread and milk
bacon and eggs
he loves grapefruit
so we got him one too

we knocked
knock knock
knocked
some more

most days
we only knocked
once

we always came
same day, same time
today something has
changed

most days
we only knocked
once

you turned
the door handle
it opened
we let ourselves in

today’s paper
wedged
between doors
never noticed that before

we called out
to him
no reply

we called out
again
and again
and again

no reply

muffled
distant
sounds

music playing
crackling
did it
spark?

I looked to you
and you to me
gravely

we called out
to him
no reply

crackling voices
wet watery
weak
radio tunes

songs that led
to a dreary bathroom
with a secret
to shed

purple toes
peeking
over
porcelain

blue lips
still
singing
wet radio tunes

we had both
dreamed
of seeing him
naked

this was not
what we had in mind
