Echo and Narcissus

Echo, a nymph, displeased her gods,
she chattered like a bird.
A curse in trade of her free speech,
repeat but the last word.

Vain Narcissus, so self-absorbed,
“I'm better than you all!”
Disdain disguised dependency
would lead to his downfall.

Echo had long loved Narcissus,
and watching him in the woods.
She longed for him to address her,
so speak to him she could.

She new nothing of his nature,
she loved him for his face.
Towards the lake she followed him,
he knelt to have a taste.

Stirring bushes, she caught his ear,
with joy she nearly died.
“Who's there?!” he cried. “There!” she replied
“Come here!” annoyed, he sighed.

Her arms, outstretched, begged his embrace,
she glided from the trees.
Smiling so expectantly
she radiated glee.

But turn from her, Narcissus did,
to gaze upon the lake.
His face reflected brilliantly,
he cared not for her sake.

To love in vain she prayed he would,
she left him on the shore.
For days and nights he stared in vain,
until he was no more.
